is running windows XP in 2023 even safe to do? I know a lot of hospitals and businesses do it, but don't they have contracts to make it safe? I run windows XP still, and am now concerned about my computer's security.
What do you even mean by safe? Any computer is safe if you aren't retarded. XP isn't getting muh updates and the only AV that supports it is Clamwin. Any piece of software you download from a strange place is pretty much guaranteed to give you a virus. Also don't even think about opening it directly to the web.

Probably would be fine, but getting a browser to work is going to be an endevour on the same level as installing as strange linux distro.

Use TinyCore. Its faster, actually much smaller than windows xp and more modern.
>>93294454
but I already have XP set up on my computer
>>93294465
You dont have to remove xp. TinyCore is portable, it runs from usb or cd.

That`s my tip. If you insist on using windows xp like a normal person then do it, actually is safier to use windows xp now than a few years ago, since nothing is compatible with this.

also I used XP daily up until 2018-2019. Not necessarily as my main OS but I did use it a lot. I didn't do banking on it except once but I did have my VPN working on that laptop and the browsers I had still have matrix blockers and ublock origin. plus a copy of Common Sense antivirus and I never felt unsafe.

Your average device running XP isn't connected to the Internet.
It's why Wannacry was such a disaster: tons of machines that shouldn't have been connected to the Internet were, with hilarious and well-documented results.

>>93294065 (OP)
What do you mean by “safe”?
For anyone who knows what they’re doing it’s fine, but if you know what you’re doing, you know the reasonable limitations of using an ancient operating system.
Don’t put anything important on XP, it would just be careless. It’s not inherently unsafe but the safety net of modern windows, modern browsers, just isn’t there to protect you from fucking up.
You go to download some shady shit on modern windows and your browser says “fuck that” to the webpage and you keep going, the browser again says “fuck that” when you try to download a file and you keep going, windows defender throws it in quarantine and you take it out, you try to run it and UAC says you shouldn’t, you run it anyway and get malware.
Windows XP and XP compatible browsers don’t care, you will just go to the page, download the file, run it and get malware with no warning against your own stupidity.

You can by all means use it semi functionally with the modern web if you know what you’re doing. If you don’t know what you’re doing, do not even attempt.
Don’t log into your bank account, don’t use any account you aren’t willing to lose, don’t buy anything online, don’t keep anything you can’t lose on the machine, you need to treat XP like a disposable installation now because it’s simply not worth any potential risk of you fucking it up for being dumb.

Any corporation that still uses XP has the systems locked off from internet access and only keeps it up because they're too stingy and lazy to update whatever trash legacy application can't run on contemporary windows. Any user that still uses XP and isn't a collector, old tech hobbyist, using it to play very old games, or museum is just a neuroplasticity-deprived retard.

Twister UI installed on Linux Mint or Ubuntu Xfce.
Twister UI is made by the same devs as Twister OS.
It's very faithful to emulating Windows XP, it even makes the startup boot noise when you login. I used it for a meme retrobuild style computer.
You'll probably want a computer made in this century to run it, but you can buy retro style computer cases that are made to look old.

>>93309334
Either I think. There's a Japanese autist who works on KernelEx for 2000 and if his blog is to be believed he does his work on real hardware. The MSFN forums are also full of people getting ancient Windows to work on new machines. I'm using XP on metal right now; the laptop was made for it anyway. I don't think I'd recommend it for more than novelty, the security will never be there.

Windows XP is a fine and secure operating system.
You're just in a constant state of being lubed up with your asshole gaping ready to get plowed if you make a mistake. Seriously. If you do something stupid, you're vulnerable, UAC may be annoying but it does help thwart some efforts.

Your biggest issue with Windows XP in the modern era is finding a browser that is secure and that supports it. It's almost impossible to get a virus on Win7+ with Chrome since it sandboxes everything (that's why it's so memory inefficient and resource heavy) while most browsers back in the XP days just acted on good faith. Simply going to a site like www.google.com but adding an extra o had the potential to give your computer aids back then. It wasn't primarily the fault of the OS, just software in general and the web.
>running flash
>letting it do whatever it wants
>be surprised when people abuse it for evil
>blame XP
XP didn't deserve the blame.

Main reason to not use XP these days is the 4GB memory limit. You could run 64-bit, but then finding drives for some obscure things might be difficult.
Better to just start using linux these days and opting out of Microsoft as a whole and just virtualizing or dualbooting for whatever you *need* Windows for.

Also Windows XP (and 7) lack basic networking security features so things that should be encrypted will be sent in plaintext, for example sending data to a local NAS in your home network. You're limited to old protocols.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block#SMB_3.0

That's something the "OS" should be easily fucking patched to resolve, but Microsoft refuses to enable such features in older versions in order to entice you to "upgrade".
You literally need Windows 8 or higher just to have basic encryption (think https-like) security when sending files from one PC to another PC over your local network.
Ideally, your network should be secure enough to not need in-home-network encryption but not having the ability to do that is simply a pathetic and obvious scam by Microsoft. Just like disabling dynamic disks (mirroring/striping HDDs, RAID5, etc) in Home (can't mirror/stripe) and Pro (can't raid5).

You're going to need to either start reading some documentation, or a lot of YouTube tutorials, and you're going to have to buy a new computer. You're not going to run Ubuntu very well on your Windows XP machine, you need something more powerful.
After that, you're going to have to read more instructions on how to modify it to look like XP.
The fact that your room doesn't have a bodypillow somehow makes it more creepy.
>>93309618
if they don't care about people using winXP, they don't care what they do there which kinda makes those unnecessary imo

Extended kernels exist. They can continue Windows 9x/ME/2000 into the XP era and XP/Vista into the Windows 7 era, and they're even working on making 8.1 and 10 programs work in Windows 7.

There's also web browsers still being maintained for as far back as XP with some limited support for 9x/ME/2000, and up-to-date chromium for Windows 7.

You can still do it on bare metal and the hardware needed isn't that old, it would still be able to load modern webpages. XP supports up to a GTX 9 series graphics card and an Ivy Bridge processor.

>ok so what can i use instead to get the look of old windows
A lot of shit, but here's the thing: Win10/11 is such a fucking mess that even if you skin the OS, you're going to run into the same fucking issue that everyone that doesn't do that does: control panel being two different fucking things, MS account shoving down your throat/etc.

It's noble that you're trying to keep a look (as weird as that is), but you're probably better off just running XP in a VM on the host system, without Internet access (or at least sandboxing it, maybe) and making that VM full-screen for what you want.

Anything is safe as long as it isn't networked.
As for xp this is even more so since the entire source code was leaked.
As for the hospitals and others running outdated software I can tell you one of the reasons from my job at a research university. Some industrial equipment only works with one program that uses a new port. To upgrade the $800 windows box would also mean upgrading the $80,000 equipment to a version that can support newer systems and connectors.

I swear, the sheer amount of people on this board that straight out refuse to use any piece of tech that is less than 20 years old blows my mind.

Let's be serious here. Why do you want to keep using a computer and OS that are both so outdated, unsafe, slow, power-hungry and incompatible with the world that they literally belong in a museum?

upgrade to a thinkpad X200, theyre 15 years old, can run libreboot and have excellent compatibility with basically any operating system including TempleOS if you set it up right
theyre very easy to libreboot as well, 9 screws and the palm rest go off and let your 5$ flasher go brrr
an X200 is powerful enough to emulate dreamcast games at full speed, has an integrated gl 2.1 intel gpu which can be problematic for blender and modern games but not for everything else its fine
the price, 20-100$ if youre lucky, it really depends, some pre-librebooted and upgraded to the max ones cost 200$ but buying ram and a new ssd, then unscrewing 3 screws to swap both out isnt hard.
but i guess you wont like a thinkpad since you're a baby, thinkpads are real computers for real men who do actual work, not play around with baby toys.

/x/ starseed here, this is a trans person so from that it is obvious a demon is manifesting through them. It's sad to see and how normalised it has become.
Every night I fight the demons in the astral realm to try and help you humans but there are so many now, I'm sorry they've become too many. I need to take my strength and flee with what I have left in myself. The demons that broke through into our world post ww2 and from European, Chinese, Asian and especially American experimentation has been too much. Do what you can, take the gnome pill.

I have been doing this for a decade. I have a daily driver on ancient hardware running Xubuntu, and I have a gaming rig made of bleeding edge shit that I use solely for gaming. It makes both machines remarkably simpler in setup and maintenance. In fact I used a 2GHz Pentium 4 as a daily driver up until 2017.

A 13yo skid can literally pwn your trusty c2d PC without your interaction (google eternablue) and a pile of "won't fix" CVEs is still growing. Best you can do is stop being NEET, leave your basement, go to work, earn some money for new computer and install windows 11 on it. I would recommend the workstation version which you can activate without paying for the key. Getting a job will also help you manage your free time better , will give you purpose in life and will make your parents stop seeing you as a disappointment.

A simplified answer is that it is safe as long as you don't connect it to the internet or use it to browse websites and download files.

A more complex answer is that it can be exploited remotely through a wide variety of attack vectors, some of which even a hardware firewall may be ineffective at stopping, furthermore if a device on your network is already compromised then windows XP is completely vulnerable; attacking windows xp machines to gain remote access on the same LAN is super easy even a child could do it
If you do decide to make the terrible decision of using XP for daily use, put it on a segregated VLAN with strict (hardware) firewall rules to prevent all traffic coming and going from the system unless absolutely necessary.

The past has a certain romanticism to it. Things then just seemed to be better. Even if they were materially worse, immaterially and aesthetically they were better.

Things were freer and more aesthetically pleasing, this came at the cost of efficiency, power, and effectiveness.

In 1920 you could drive to the store without a seatbelt or license in your car that ran on leaded gas, buy a case of dynamite and a machine gun, then drive home to your house that doesn't follow any building codes, and distill your own liquor. All while everything is made unnecessarily beautiful and ornate.

Computers are the same. My windows 98 machine will let me install programs, run obvious malware, deltree the c drive, hell even write directly to memory without so much as a prompt, and it does it all while looking so stylish. Modern software is too bogged down with security features and accessories that I just don't want.

Then you take the case ,the components, and the monitor. Yes they're objectively worse in every way, but they're just so much more interesting mechanically. Its like comparing a boring and efficient diesel electric gas turbine engine to a compound triple expansion steam engine. One is better in every way, but I like looking at the other when its running.
>>93347132
>Modern software is too bogged down with security features and accessories that I just don't want.
It's a matter of tech just getting worse with time for me.
Windows is a great example of this. Had a few blunders here and there until Windows 8 dropped, and Windows hasn't recovered ever since, making Windows 7 the last good one.
Downgraded UI, the OS spits in your face on a regular basis and you're forced to put up with it because you must updooooot.
What I also miss is tech just having more aesthetic in general, nowadays stuff feels cold and sterile.

Maybe if you have some heavy network restrictions, not sure how many routers allow rules/routes to make it so a computer is only able to communicate with one service over the internet, like say an ATM, but I don't see why you couldn't make routers drop traffic for anything other than (to/from) the server providing whatever is needed to do card transactions. A packet appliance might be another thing you can throw on top of routing/rules to examine packet data directly and dump them if something unusual comes along.
